Gary,
I think there is one more important component to creativity - mistakes (especially in my case). What to do now that the last piece of matched ipe was just cut 1 inch too short? How do I "redesign" the chair to recover? Cut the other three legs short and market it to shorter people (aha! children!). Some creative inlay perhaps to hide the scarf joint? Ah, a three-legged Chippendale chair! How creative.

It is probably worth pointing out that this post comes from a person to whom you once suggested: "Measure twice...well, measure thrice"

Ah, one should look at the white piece of paper with endless opportunity, not an intimidating empty canvas with an angry Mother Superior hovering with a wooden ruler demanding "Use your head, put something down quickly, NOW!"
Sometimes I find solitude in starring at that blankness and then the creative flow begins. No, I'm not smoking something. Isn't one individuals creation another's opportunity to continually expand on it? Rebar comes to mind......

You could write about design every time you sit down at the keyboard, and your readers would lap it up. You would probably get bored out of your head. It's a rocky road for many of us, striving for balance, rhythm, proportion, texture...and then it still has to get built...

Much of the time my brain feels like that white piece of paper in the sketchbook.

Does it ever get easier?

Dear Mr. Rogowski;

We really don't appreciate the suggestion about bamboo shoots growing up through our mattress. We really don't jump up and down too much on our beds. We don't think that rebar is a good idea, either. There is still some in our back yard from when the shop got built and it is way too rusty to use in a bed.

Sincerely,

The Boys

Hi Gary, I like your musing on design and the fact that you are encouraging drawing ... Draw,draw,draw.. Draw a little everyday is my advice to people who want to learn design. Look at stuff you like and draw it. In his recent book 'Outliers', Malcolm Gladwell says that people become 'expert' at something after they put in their '10,000 hours'. Design is one of those somethings. I myself am at the point where I have 'so many drawings,so little time', but still I can't stop drawing. And, you're right, I am nearly always surprised ...

From another Gary, I coudn't help but sit here and nod my head...ALOT!. Oh man...How so very true. I like the idea of the momentum theory, and I wholeheartedly agree as I have projects that I don't want to stop becuase things are going so well and with echos of.."Honey??...Are you going to come in anytime soon?" ringing through the shop. And then I look at some of the remnants of things started...not finished for one reason or another and I sigh. That is why this article made me smile..as I am guilty as anyone else in the "start no finish" category.

Thank you for such an enjoyable read!

My problem is that it isn't just my woodworking that is like that. It is my whole life!
